recently i was asked to be in a show at the AGH - funhouse
when i first thought of funhouse, well let’s just say i am not super keen on spaces with a lot of people, sounds, smells and visual and auditory stimulation, so
if you were to consider entering a funhouse, which is usually at a fair or carnival, what types of food would you see there
which led to memories of
sticky impossibly red candy apples
surreal blue green candy floss
and the indescribable flavour of pink elephant popcorn
and i set to drawing
when i am creating a piece i most often start with paper, in this case IKEA paper, of which i have both the kids roll of paper and the fantastic packing paper that i acquire a stack of whenever i visit
i drew these thinking i would make them roughly at this scale and coloured with marker to get a sense of colour placement and balance
and whenever i draw something my brain preset is to wonder
what would this look like in fabric
or in this case stitch
i am exploring hand stitch a lot more recently - what if i pushed what i usually create and try something with texture and a sense of the hand that created it
i ended up with these three pieces
(why three? i have been fascinated by triptychs since art history at university, they need their own post entirely)
and because my mind does not stop exploring once she has found a “point of interest” i thought about
how art is priced
how artists are supposed to make a good living
how we consume art daily
how we rarely if ever pay for that
more on that later
curious until forever,
tania
I know that IKEA paper! I love the triptych.
